Felipe Calv Brings Grave Mistake to Life
Welcome to Alder Hollow, a town where the living are scarce and the dead have made themselves at home. That's the premise of Grave Mistake, a new four-book Hybrid Reader series from BookLife, written by John Wood and illustrated by our own Felipe Calv.
Aimed at readers 7–11, the series follows Lila, Ethan, and Max as they try to hold their fading town together. When Alder Hollow's library closes, the trio starts delivering books door to door, hiding them in unlikely spots. But book delivery gets complicated in a town this haunted, with graveyards that aren't empty and houses that aren't abandoned!
What sets the series apart is its format: full graphic novel panels throughout, giving Felipe's artwork as much room to set the mood as the text. Felipe's linework and character design keep Lila, Ethan, and Max warm and expressive even as the ghost stories get darker.
With the stakes rising across all four books, Grave Mistake is shaping up to be a standout in horror for younger readers, and a great showcase for Felipe's art in a longer, panel-driven format.
